ABDO Announce the Paediatric Certificate Expanded to a Diploma

The Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) announced that its Level 7 Certificate in Paediatric Eyecare has been expanded to a diploma, marking a significant step forward in the development of specialist clinical training for dispensing opticians.

ABDO’s new Level 7 Diploma in Paediatric Eyecare is designed to develop advanced clinical, communication and analytical skills required for high‑quality paediatric practice.

The programme combines online synchronous and asynchronous learning, interactive CPD activities and practical skills development, leading to a final professional assessment that brings together your knowledge, clinical reasoning and evidence‑based decision‑making.

The programme consists of seven online modules, interactive online CPD activities and a face‑to‑face practical workshop day, followed by a final professional assessment.

These modules are as follows:

Module 1 – Evidence‑based practice

Module 2 – Advanced communication

Module 3 – Advanced vision management

Module 4 – Myopia and refractive management

Module 5 – Neurodiversity

Module 6 – Facial anthropometry

Module 7 – Acute and specialist eyecare

The total expected learning commitment is approximately 900 hrs, including taught content, self‑directed study, practical skills development and assessment preparation. The course has been designed for busy working professionals and so the online modular content has been crafted in short, bite-sized formats. This enables students to engage with their studies around work and other life commitments.

Alex Webster, professional development director, says, “We are pleased to announce the launch of the new Level 7 Diploma in Paediatric Eyecare, which builds on and thoughtfully advances the strong foundations of the previous programme. The updated diploma reflects current clinical standards and recent developments in paediatric practice, offering improved structure, clarity and academic depth. It strengthens the specialist knowledge needed in modern paediatric eyecare and will support practitioners in delivering consistently high quality, evidence-based care for children and their families. Its introduction reflects our ongoing commitment to raising standards and enhancing paediatric services across the profession.”

The course and exam fee is £1,500 for ABDO members and £1,850 for non-members. You can find out more about the Diploma in Paediatric Eyecare here.
