Optometry Scotland welcomes ASDA Opticians as its newest corporate member

Optometry Scotland (OS), the representative body for optical professionals, has welcomed Asda Opticians to its network, adding 17 branches to Optometry Scotland’s portfolio.

The addition of Asda Opticians takes Optometry Scotland’s current membership to more than 380 practices across Scotland.

As the representative body for optical professionals in Scotland, OS has been operating for more than two decades, committed to advancing world class eye care in the country.

The securing of Asda, a leading name in optical care and services, follows other large multiple organisations including Boots, Duncan and Todd Group, Hakim Group, Specsavers and Vision Express, and alongside a host of independent members, strengthens OS’ position as a leading advocate for the sector, representing a diverse range of practitioners, optical practices and organisations committed to the highest standards of care.

The membership body’s dedicated council and board work on behalf of members to preserve the integrity of the General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) contract. This is done through lobbying for enhanced services for the optometric and dispensing professions and more increased funding to preserve the General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) contract.

Eilidh Thomson, chair of OS said: “We are thrilled to welcome Asda Opticians on board as members of OS. Their extensive reach and commitment to accessible, high-quality eye care make them a valuable addition to our growing network.

“This partnership reflects the increasing importance of OS in bringing together all voices within the sector to ensure the continued development and delivery of outstanding optical services for the people of Scotland.”

Stuart Laird, head of optical, superintendent optometrist for Asda Opticians, which provides both NHS and private eye tests at its practices, said: “I’m really pleased to confirm that Asda have joined Optometry Scotland as corporate members.

“Optometry Scotland has a long history of being fantastic ambassadors for the eyecare sector in Scotland, representing its members in a fair, balanced and meaningful way. The opportunity for Asda to join the organisation and contribute to this valuable and impactful work is one I was delighted to accept and we can’t wait to get started!”

Optometry Scotland has been instrumental in influencing key policy decisions, promoting innovation, and driving greater investment in the sector.

Last year, OS secured a 6% increase in General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) fees paid to optometrists in Scotland, following extensive liaison with the Scottish Government. This represented the fourth consecutive annual increase since 2021 and is in alignment with recommendations made by the Doctors and Dentists Pay Review Body (DDRB).
