On 24th April 2025, we published our most comprehensive look to date at the state of the optometry workforce in Scotland.

Drawing on nearly 350 responses and a strong 48% engagement rate, the survey provided valuable insights into the pressures and patterns that have been shaping our profession. From vacancy rates and part-time working trends to future demand and pre-reg training capacity, the findings echoed the experiences and concerns many of you have been sharing with us.

The report highlighted a workforce that is young, increasingly female, and leaning towards more flexible working patterns. However, it also revealed clear challenges, including geographic disparities, high locum use, and a trend towards reduced working hours, particularly among younger professionals.

In response to these findings, we have now launched a dedicated Workforce Research Short Life Working Group (SLWG). This group is leading the next phase of work and will oversee the commissioning of an external research partner to carry out a detailed and independent study. The goal is to support long-term workforce planning, inform policy development, and help shape practical, evidence-based solutions for the sector.

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to the survey. Your input was invaluable and has helped set the direction for this important work. We are committed to keeping you informed as things progress and would ask you to please continue engaging with us in any future workforce consultations.
