Today, Diabetes UK launches the “Strike Out Stigma” campaign which highlights:
- Over 70% of people with diabetes report experiencing blame or judgement
- More than 50% of people with diabetes avoid medical appointments due to stigma or shame.
As eyecare professionals, these statistics are highly relevant to us. The first signs of microvascular changes in diabetes can often be detected during routine eye examinations and identifying these early, asymptomatic changes is crucial, not only for ocular health but overall health of the people we care for. By staying informed, we can support both our patients’ ocular health and their general health – as with diabetes, the two go hand in hand.
