The 2026-2030 strategy sets out its mission for optometry, eye care and health
The Association of Optometrists (AOP) has announced its new Five-Year Strategy, setting out a clear and ambitious direction for the organisation and the profession. The strategy reinforces the AOP’s commitment to supporting its members at every stage of their professional journey, while positioning optometry as a vital and forward-looking component of modern healthcare delivery.
Emma-Jane Spofforth, AOP Chairman said: “We are delighted to introduce our strategy for 2026–2030, setting out our commitment to visionary change over the next five years. This strategy’s foundational principle is simple: to ensure the organisation and our members are ready for the future, and to advocate for the expanding role optometry should play delivering healthcare to everyone in every part of the UK.”
Adam Sampson, AOP Chief Executive said: “We remain committed to providing services that meet the highest standards; providing our members with the defence they need and support whatever their career path; ensuring our members are equipped to deliver safe and effective clinical care to the public; and help to ensure optical businesses can be sustainable, resilient and growing.
“The strategy builds on the organisation’s established track record, drawing on deep professional knowledge and proven achievements. It responds directly to the evolving landscape of optometric care, including the rapid advancement of new technologies, ongoing regulatory and legislative reform, and significant changes in how health and social care services are commissioned and delivered.”
The strategy sets out the strategic factors that underpin the AOP’s vision, its key priorities, and the projects the organisation is prioritising in the next five years. It also describes the work the AOP undertook in its previous strategy, and what it achieved.
The mission underpinning the AOP’s strategy includes working to create conditions where businesses and careers can thrive, helping the profession navigate the challenges and opportunities represented by new technology, and seeking to take advantage of the Government’s commitment to making more use of community providers including optometrists and dispensing opticians in the provision of healthcare. Together, these objectives are designed to strengthen the voice of members and ensure they are fully prepared to meet both current demands and future challenges within the sector.
